12.23.20 – NANPA
Panels that dial out seven digits must be re-programed to dial out a 10-digit number, which includes the area code plus telephone number.
The updates or reprogramming must occur between April 24-Oct. 24, 2021 (the permissive dialing period). Starting these efforts before April 24, 2021, may result in failed calls if permissive 10-digit dialing has not yet been implemented. The changes need to be completed by October 24, 2021.
No change is needed if the alarm panels are currently dialing out 10-digits, or if they are dialing out a toll-free number (800, 888, 844, etc.) to reach the monitoring center.
Service Providers operating in the NPAs required to transition to 10-digit dialing for 988 National Suicide Prevention Lifeline
Information below pertains to the FCC Order 20-100, which designated 988 as the 3-digit abbreviated dialing code to access the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, and the requirement to transition to 10-digit dialing in the 83 area codes that currently permit 7-digit dialing and also use 988 as a Central Office code. The affected states and area codes, implementation schedule, standard dialing plan, and milestones of the project can be located at www.nanpa.com, under Publications/Planning Letters – Planning Letter 544.
