Amazon’s Ring subsidiary has recalled hundreds of thousands of its home video security doorbells after receiving reports of them catching ablaze, according to officials.
Roughly 350,000 of the devices in the United States were recalled Tuesday due to fire and burn hazards. Another 8,700 were recalled in Canada, according to a statement from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The fire risk arises when incorrect screws are used for installation, causing the video doorbell’s battery to overheat, the statement said.
Ring has received 85 incident reports of incorrect doorbell screws installed, with 23 of those devices igniting and causing property damage. Eight reports of minor burns have been lodged, according to the statement.
The home security system was sold for around $100 at electronics and home goods stores nationwide and online at Amazon and Ring’s websites from June through October, the commission said.
The second generation Ring video doorbell’s model number is 5UM5E5, according to the commission. The device has a blue ring at the front and comes in two colors: “satin nickel,” which is just black and silver, and “venetian bronze,” or black and bronze.
The federal government urged people to immediately stop installing the recalled video doorbell and contact Ring for revised installation instructions. Consumers can also download them at the company’s website.
Those who bought a Ring device can check to see if their video doorbell is part of the recall through the company’s website or app, according to officials.
