3.26.23 – Brian Broom – Mississippi Clarion Ledger

A storm system that passed through Mississippi Friday night left 25 dead in the state and many more in need.

Homes and businesses were destroyed in several counties and residents were left without basics such as shelter, running water, and power.

Donations of everyday basics, non-perishable food, water, etc. are being accepted at a number of locations.

Some of the immediate needs include:

  • Bottled water
  • Canned goods
  • Paper products
  • Pet food
  • Diapers and wipes
  • Manual can openers
  • Baby formula
  • Personal hygiene items
  • Pet carriers
  • Laundry detergent
  • Cleaning supplies

Where to take donations for storm victims

The Mississippi Department of Public Safety is partnering with theMississippi Emergency Management Agency and the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce to accept donations of bottled water, canned goods, and paper products for the victims of the storms that struck Mississippi on March 24. 

Donations can be dropped off at the Armory at the Mississippi State Fairgrounds in Jackson

  • Monday, March 27, 2023, 9 a.m.- 3 p.m.
  • Tuesday, March 28, 2023 9 a.m.- 3 p.m.

Donations can be dropped off at Crossway Church: 1825 US 61 South, Vicksburg

  • Monday, March 27th from 8 a.m. – 10 a.m.

The National Guard Armory/Civic Center is open and accepting donations at 19719 US 61, Rolling Fork.

The City of Gluckstadt is also accepting donations at City Hall as well as Sullivan’s Marketplace and Seasons Gluckstadt locations.

The City of Hattiesburg is also accepting donations at any Hattiesburg fire station and at the EOC, 4080 US 11, Hattiesburg.

The Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi is accepting donations Sunday March 26, from 1-5 p.m. in Hernando at Hernando Square near 315 Losher Street.

The City of Oxford is accepting donations at Fire Station One on McElroy Drive.

Yazoo City Walmart Parking Lot: 2129 Grand Avenue

  • Sunday – Operation BBQ Mobile Feeding Unit

Donate through GoFundMe

To make it easier for people who want to support those affected, GoFundMe has launched a centralized hub housing all verified fundraisers related to the storms.

Here are several verified fundraisers that can be found on the centralized hub:

  • Rolling Fork Tornado Relief Fund: Jordan Windham and Sarah Rentrop are two doctors from Starkville Urology who created this relief fund to provide aid to the people and businesses of Rolling Fork and Sharkey County.
  • Help Rolling Fork and Winona, MS Tornado VictimsOath Of Action is a non-profit founded by veterans to help veterans and their communities with targeted disaster relief and acts of kindness. They have launched this emergency relief fund to support the affected families in Rolling Rock and Winona. 
  • Mississippi Tornado Emergency Relief: The Michigan Storm Chasers created this fundraiser to support the communities of Rolling Fork, Silver City, Winona, and Amory.
  • Fund Mississippi Student Water Delivery: The Mississippi Student Advocacy Team consists of college students who were moved to help in response to the Jackson Water Crisis at the end of Summer 2022. Their team will be serving the Rolling Fork community following the aftermath of the tornadoes.
  • Donations for the Herndon family: Donations to this fund will go directly to the family of Ethan Herndon and his daughter Riley Herndon who were killed when the tornado destroyed their home in Wren, Mississippi. They are survived by Ethan’s wife and Riley’s mother, Elizabeth, as well as two older children. Elizabeth suffered multiple injuries including a broken arm, leg, and dislocated hip.
