‘This is going to change lives,’ Reeves said.

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves is asking legislators to approve incentives for a proposed factory that would make electric vehicle batteries.

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves is asking legislators to approve incentives for a proposed factory that would make electric vehicle batteries.

The Republican governor said Tuesday such a facility could employ 2,000 people with an average annual salary of about $66,000, and would cost the company $1.9 billion to build.

“This is going to change lives for thousands and thousands of people in North Mississippi and in Marshall County,” Reeves said.

While the governor didn’t name the “U.S.-based company,” he said it would result in “the largest annual payroll commitment of any major project in Mississippi history.”

Reeves said the project is targeted for Marshall County. The factory would make electric vehicle batteries. The governor said money has already been put toward the Chickasaw Trails Industrial Park, which is where the business would be located. Reeves said the business would be on 500 acres.

The governor is asking legislators to approve $350 million in incentives during Thursday’s special session.

House Speaker Jason White said he looks forward to a fast approval of the package. Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann said he anticipates it moving through the Senate “quite rapidly” for approval.
