Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards said the state will stay in a modified version of Phase 2.
“To be very blunt and very clear, it has never been as mad as it is right now,” Dr. Joseph Kanter said.
The governor made the announcement at a press conference Tuesday, Jan. 12. He said the reason is due to the high level of the virus spreading in the state. Every region in the state has a COVID-19 positivity rate over 10%.
“Just a few days ago we reported our second highest daily death total since the start of the pandemic. 105. For those of you that cover the legislature or are familiar with the House of Representative’s chamber, every seat in that chamber if it were filed with an individual and they all died it would be 105. That was one day,” Gov. Edwards said.
Gov. Edwards said the recent spike in cases are due to informal social gatherings. He said it’s time to buckle down and do our part to mitigate the spread of the virus.
“While many individuals have been extremely careful and responsible, too many have not and we can do a better job collectively,” Gov. Edwards said. “I doubt there are many folks out there across our state and across our country who at this point doesn’t know someone that has had COVID, or maybe somebody that has died or is in the hospital right now. That’ll give you some indication of how widespread this disease is in every community across the state of Louisiana,” Gov. Edwards said.
The governor said the COVID-19 vaccine is now being administered in every parish in the state. He said the vaccine is safe and effective and asked every resident to get vaccinated when it becomes available to them.
