‘Difference between life and death’: Inside the staffing crisis at 911 dispatch centers

9-1-1 dispatch centers around the country are experiencing staffing shortages, leading in some areas to delays in emergency response. Filling the positions, which often involve life or death situations, can be difficult when fast-food restaurants are offering higher wages, said Brian Fontes, CEO of the National Emergency Number Association.

‘Overwhelmed’ 911 system led to delays in St. Louis storm response, official says

A severe storm system left the St. Louis 9-1-1 system "overwhelmed" last week, with 1,000 calls in an hour and exposing the need to upgrade the system, officials said. In one case, responses to reports of a woman and child hit by falling trees were delayed, and the two later died.

Pawned Ring Led to Arrest of Rochester Burglary Suspect

Investigators learned later in the day that a ring taken from the safe had been sold to a local pawn shop and that led to the arrest of 51-year-old Joseph Daniel on Thursday. He was arraigned today on a second-degree burglary charge and was released without bail.
